Songwriting is breathing to Emi Meyer. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Emi moved to
Seattle, Washington before the age of one. Living between cultures, speaking two
languages, and being quite quirky herself, it came naturally to create her form
of expression. Emi’s distinct voice combined with years of jazz and classical
training, a genuine message, and catchy melodies speaks to listeners across
boundaries and resonates soul gained from defining her own path.
Emi started piano at six. “From early on, I couldn’t understand why certain
songs made me feel so good. I would dance around the kitchen listening to the
Beatles.” Emi then bought herself three tapes in third grade: Mariah Carey, TLC,
and Michael Jackson. She usually can’t name her favorite artists or genre—it’s
rather certain songs, words, and notes that speak to her. This is channeled in
her eclectic style.
During the last two years, Emi has been performing in the US (Los Angeles and
Seattle) and Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) at venues such as the Hotel Café, Blue Note
Japan, and the Sundance Film Festival. While she composes primarily for voice
and piano, she is pleased with the additional orchestration on her latest
release, Curious Creature of guitar, bass, cello, and drums. Emi’s song
"Sunrise" premiered in Michael Kang’s West 32nd at the Tribeca Film Festival,
and “One Good Song” has aired on the Sundance Channel in the award-winning film,
Dragon of Love. She also has been featured as a guest vocalist for Jazztronik.
Further collaborations with film and various artists present an exciting musical
journey ahead.
Emi is currently performing across Japan with her band while studying at
Kyoto University. "The greatest joy has been getting to make new friends through
music. Making art together automatically crosses any boundaries into a deeper
connection." Her latest compositions undoubtedly integrate these new experiences
and influences.
ps. She studies Ethnomusicology, sometimes misses California, has a hankering
for brownie sundaes, and likes to dirt bike and make things.
Thank you to band members Kentaro Kurashiki, Keisuke Nishii, Satoshi Kita,
Jazztronik, Keitaro Kamo (EMI Japan) and all others who have made Emi feel at
home this year in Japan.
"Armed with a piano and all-embracing musical training, Emi Meyer showcases
her distinct vocals, personal lyrics and soaring compositions with a sound
spanning folk, jazz, rock, and pop." –Experience Music Project Sound Off! 2007
