Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 7/7/08   "Devon - India in Chicago"

Guia, Doreen and Boba

10:25 pm -- My friend Doreen and I are jetting straight up the escalator of the Red Line subway toward Union Station. Luckily Doreen decided to wear tennis shoes. No time to think -- although I was rocking a dope fit with a lowcut backless gray tunic, black skinnies in my silver-thonged flipflops to match. Being the downtown aficionado has its good points when you're racing to catch the 10:35 Metra back home to Libertyville. Will we make it? I'm panting, passing the banks in the Financial District. And I'm sweating spices from the tasty yet hot Indian snacks we had just eaten. An old man yells, You're not gonna catch that train! I said, You wanna bet! 10:35 Buddy, we're gonna make it! At that point, I didn't know if we were gonna make it. But I had to have faith. 'Cos what the heck were we running for? We've gotta believe we can make it. We cross the bridge and run. A couple is moving oh so slowly down the escalator leading to the North Concourse. Doreen follows me as I scurry past the Food Court. I glance at the digital clock 10:32. My eyes spot Track 9 for the Milwaukee District North Line. The conductor greets us and points, Go to the last car! Phew! We made it, we're safe on the train. And we don't have to wait til 12:35 or be stuck in the city.

We walk through life, not knowing if we will make that train. But will that uncertainty stop you? Or will you listen to the old cynical man who doubts you and discourages you from your mission? Despite all obstacles, Doreen and I had faith we were going to catch the train. With three minutes to spare, an angel greeted us at the gate. Faith, my friends.

Our exploration in the city was worth it! Devon had opened a whole new world of spices and colors in my palette of dreams.

Every corner we turned we knew we were in Chicago, but somehow it felt like India. Or what I hope is a piece of India that inspires me to visit the homeland. But I'm sure in Chicago, when we visit a neighborhood, a country is made of its people, not merely the land on which they dwell.

The posters on the video store window drive a yearning in me to see the Bollywood stars in jeweled hair sing and dance onstage. Doreen and I browse in the boutiques, I entranced by the flamboyant turquoise and shocking pink fabrics and gold necklaces ornately designed with colored gemstones. Women in India are truly princesses. They are draped in the
most graceful designs I have seen in fashion.

We're getting hungry, and so we look for snacks. Everyone around us was welcoming. Like a bright-eyed child I wasn't afraid to ask questions. The woman at Sukhadia's Snacks and Sweets on Devon understood we had never really eaten there before. So when I ordered the dahi batata puri which is made with garbanzo beans, yogurt, chutney, spices and other ingredients, she took the heat factor down a notch and said, are you sure you want it that spicy? And I'm glad she did. Then Doreen who has a friend named Priya had tasted samosa before. Hey Doreen, I said, Samosa kinda tastes like empanadas with potatoes, onions and spices.

I realize some people are already well versed in Indian food and have tried these snacks before. But this was my first time really tasting snacks from India. You can call our city of Chicago a cozy cosmopolis.

BLOG: An Emotional Week

The week began pretty well, Asad (DJ Manowax) invited Ray to paint at IMAN, so I came along. For all of you who don't know DJ Manowax, he's a great leader in the community of Chicago, in the Muslim and hiphop community who stands out because he's always dutiful and he's not looking for credit or fame either.

This week has been really tough. Ray and I split. I was crying right before the interview. I came on the radio at WRTE 90.5 FM for my interview late by 30 minutes at 1030pm. Kevin came to videotape the interview for the record. Luis Tubens played Lemon Light. It was really hard to concentrate on the interview at Radio Arte. I felt a little serious when I'm normally lighthearted. And my tone changed of that from a naive girl to a serious and distraught trying to calm down from the hurt and put it together woman. I didn't really wanna meet Luis Tubens like this. But it was just one of my bad nights. But I guess he understood. We rapped a little about why I got into music etc. etc. And then we talked about a colleague RodOne and RodStarz and this rumor that he got arrested in New York and faced police brutality for defending a street vendor. I've known RodOne since U of I and he's always been political. He's sorta like your modern day Che Guevarra, you know reincarnated, except Rod is from Chile. But you know what sucks! I told Luis, I was like man I studied on immigration policy 'cos I thought we were gonna talk politics ayayay. Despite that I'm glad people listened across the nation (US) and around the world on
www. wrte. org

Ahhh the first impression that I gave Luis when I met him was that of an overly emotional woman. That I am...

By the end of the night, I was just over it -- the whole relationship with Ray. Maybe we're just not compatible anymore and I don't excite him. I feel he takes me for granted. I walked to Kev's who videotaped 'cos it was only a few blocks from the radio station WRTE in Pilsen.

But Thursday things just changed in one day. I surrounded myself with positive people. My friend Chris is awesome, I can really relate to a lot with him, which first began with the music industry but has blossomed to a platonic friendship in which I know that he cares about me, and he doesn't see me as a girl or as a woman but first and foremost as a friend who has helped me in times of trouble. He also introduced me to a new friend Robbi who's mad cool too. That set the tone for the rest of yesterday. I had an appointment with an underground hiphop producer. And what I like about him is that he's really upfront and honest. There's something dark and mysterious about him. I really liked debating with him. I really felt happy around him. I got a chance to hang out with a special person like himself who appreciated my company. He said he liked my curves. And you know what I don't know what's gonna happen. But I hope that no matter what he and I are always friends.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 5/23/08   "Guia Rivera Meets Jack Benny"

BLOG: Jack Benny Middle School

I'm wild, carefree today. Woke up early this morning, took the train from Chicago and Noah my buddy picked me up from the Waukegan train station.

Man it was so fun at Jack Benny Middle School. Mr. Silva invited me. I was running late from the train and Noah and I were looking for Jack Benny Middle School. Then we got lost. But I eventually arrived. Let me tell you! I had a great time. All the young people having fun participating. I'm really into the interactive live experience -- there's just so much that the internet just can't capture. I'm really more interpersonal. And it feels good to get to know everyone and talk after the performance. One of my most memorable experiences today was a student named Romeo who asked me to sign his arm with a Sharpie (: There were a lot of talented young people dancers and singers, and I hope I can help Nicole, who invited me to her school, in developing her talents. I like getting energetic onstage. Mr. Silva gave me flowers from the school to thank me for the performance. Awww! That was really sweet.

I'm just relaxed today. It was nice to see our puppy Boba when I got home from my boyfriend's house. Haven't seen her since Sunday. Last nite we had band practice from 6 to 10pm. I'd been taking the train all yesterday, etc.

Tomorrow... Six Flags Great America (:

P.S. I will be doing my first art deal next week. My boyfriend and I are both fans of visual artists (you know sculptors, etc.) and we are getting more into the artistic community and networking with artists as well as art lovers interested in buying art.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 5/20/08   "Guia On The Radio and MORE"

Hello ATO!

It was very last minute. But I received an email Saturday afternoon from Music Director & WRLR Radio Host Ben Richards to come onto his show which discusses the roots and branches aka our musical and cultural influences that shape the songs we create. Ben was really nice on the phone, and I'm really happy that he's diggin "Snake Charmer." Everyone I perform "Snake Charmer" for really likes the song! What's even sweeter is that Ben supports artists from Lake County. That's my backyard Lake County and it's fun making noise in my own backyard. I can literally walk to Six Flags Great America and I am there. I spend half my week in Grayslake/Gurnee and half my week in the city of Chicago with my boyfriend. And he's like yeah maybe we should take the webcam out 'cos we got thing called JustinTV that we use at WRLR. And I'm like nah, I just wanna chill back in the studio and go with the flow and not have to worry about the camera, cos after all, it is RADIO.

I have been busy this whole month with new music business activities always sprouting up. My boyfriend drove me all the way home to Lake County from Chicago. We talked. And I realize how much I love him. After talking, I am happy he finally sees me as his equal and that my opinion is to be respected and valued. I feel that my projecting the ideas of Cleopatra and strong women like Bette Davis drew in an inner confidence from inspiration. I feel that when he saw this new confidence in me, he valued me more because I valued myself more. I have been the calmest I have been in weeks.

My boyfriend Ray dropped me off at Auntie Melanie's because I had to perform at the United Military Friendship Society Induction Ball in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. She is an awesome hula instructor and has been doing so for 15 years. She performed hula last nite with the ladies she taught. Everyone thinks I'm related to Auntie Melanie 'cos we look alike and share similar personality characteristics. Maybe it is the bond between teacher and student that grows into friendship between wise and earnest. I popped my cd into the dj's cd player. And before I go onstage, I always like to refresh the song in my mind. I felt carefree performing on the ballroom floor. The people loved it! I felt very confident socializing with everybody. And it felt good to know that everyone is supportive. I truly believe that our personal successes are a result of the belief and support of others who care.

This evening I was interviewed as a guest on Ben Richards show Radio Relics on WRLR 98.3 FM. What was really fun was that it was an interactive experience through interactive tv aka
www. justin. tv/wrlr. Turns out we did use the web cam. I felt right at home in the interview chair. Hey we were online might as well tell my peoples about it so they can join in. That's the great part about radio and interactive tv; it's not just you talking - your friends and supporters can talk back and tell you what's on their minds. We got to play my favorite musical influences... Elena Paparizou "My Number One," Jefferson Starship "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," and Thalia's "Piel Morena." I even did a live in-studio performance. People always want to know if I really sound like the recording. And yes I do!!! I can really sing. We got comments from Tony Webster, Jamie Rivers (www. myspace. com/jamierivers) in Orlando, Florida, and Jonathan in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tony called in and commented on the direction of hiphop and on my strong voice. We did a lit bit of crazy dancing in the radio studio -- I even did a back bend haha... John Marcus and Ben Richards I am thankful for the opportunity.

I'd have to say I enjoy what I do, especially the interactive stuff. I was sad when we had to end the show 'cos the next dj was coming in.
But I look forward to other experiences such as that this past weekend!

Flower Drum Song

Last nite I watched Flower Drum Song for the very first time. Often, people are often complaining how Hollywood misrepresents Asian Americans and this specific film Chinese Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area. But this classic was refreshing. Nancy Kwan and many of the other characters showed that Asian Americans can still maintain cultural values while becoming an integral part of the American fabric. Maybe I'm a few years behind. But the blurb on the DVD case says this Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is revolutionary, for it shows Asians finding happiness in the American dream.

Yay! We've got band rehearsal this week. I've got a mentor and friend; his name is Chris Devins. He travelled to Japan. But hopefully he'll be back soon. From him, I learn new things all the time. I'm kinda like his grasshopper, you know? He imparted some wisdom on me regarding working and dealing with different personality types and issues. He told me of this "Mastery of Management" theory developed by Taibi Kahler. We have different makeups according to the Personality Pattern Index. And basically, we can either be Promoter, Dreamer, Reactor, Rebel, Persister, Workaholic or a combination of these personalities. And from here, we can figure out what motivates us in accomplishing work or being successful as a leader or when we play a role in a group or our profession. Knowing other people's personalities helps to better understand their needs and their needs for recognition and how different personalities handle stress as well as what negative reactions to look out for. This is certainly instrumental I believe in whatever field you're enterting 'cos we are a social universe, we have to communicate with people. This helps us to be aware of what makes us tick and why people behave or work a certain way. Basically creating a better understanding means more harmony and a deeper grasp on leadership skills. This is some pretty cool information Chris turned me onto. Man this guy Taibi Kahler who came up with this stuff is a genius! Think of this next time you're heading a project involving teamwork.

Lately I've been struggling with issues of male domination. In my boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, I feel that still my opinions or beliefs as a girl or a woman are not valued. And so I started looking to women figures to help me find strength... such as Cleopatra. We forget she was in fact Greek and not Egyptian, as she is of the Ptolemy dynasty and successors to Alexander the Great's empire. But she learned the language of her Egyptian people and adopted their religious customs. Get this, I was watching this biography narrated by Angelica Houston (she rocks!) and we often forget who Cleopatra is because of the miskewed Roman image of Cleopatra as a harlot or a vamp -- instead the historical research by Egyptologist points to Cleopatra as a matro figure and a true and more than capable and moral ruler in the true sense of the word. She was a master of strategy and highly intelligent with discipline in tact to realize her political motives. She was a woman of charm and magnetism because of her spirit and personality -- and completely opposite of the stripper, bellydance caricature devised by Octavian's camp. \

Maybe I can't meet Cleopatra in this lifetime. But on my wish list of people I'd like to meet one day: Deborah Kanafani. She is an American writer and television producer of Lebanese descent. Her book "Unveiled: How an American Woman Found Her Way Through Politics, Love and Obedience in the Middle East" really helped me see the strength in women and peacemakers in the Middle East. I saw a part of myself in her and I think every woman can relate which is why I think this is a must-read for all women. She started out a woman who was confident about her ideas and gradually because of her marriage, felt her sense of individuality and freedom dwindle at the expense of being in the shadow of her husband, until she found the courage to divorce him and regain the self-esteem and independence she had before her difficult marriage with the politician. She had to travel to the Middle East to be with her two children after her ex-husband just took full custody of the children against her wishes. Instead of disobeying Islamic law, Deborah Kanafani found work in Palestine to be with her children despite the unfair circumstances. 'Hope you'll read the book to find out what happens to her children... Kanafani ultimately made a difference with her job as a tv producer in creating programs in the Middle East to support peace efforts and to improve the social well-being of women in the Middle East. Kanafani is an independent woman from New York who I'm paraphrasing, expresses that art because of brings peace and humanity through expression and vision where politics falls short. She married Marwan Kanafani righthand man and spokesperson for Yassir Arafat, PLO Leader and Palestinian President. She got to witness history firsthand and on the inside of a veiled political landscape. She befriended some of the most legendary female figures of the Middle East in this modern time. Did you know that Suha Arafat is the one responsible for Arafat's peace signing at the White House with Clinton? Suha was Arafat's wife. Women are often in the shadows. But women like Suha's mother Raymonda Tawil show bravery in trying to see both sides of the Israeli-Palestian conflict. Even if Raymonda was put in a vulnerable position for having Israeli friends and trying to promote peace. Man if I met Deborah Kanafani, I'd have so many questions to ask her! So many questions surround the Middle East, no one really knows what it's really like -- until they've actually been there. I hope one day I can visit in order to get past the distorted images I see on corporate media. There's still a lot of good happening, where the media exxagerates all the bad. Hmmmm...

Even though we graduate from school or college, I feel it's important to keep up a rich readerly life. And I don't mean like internet or magazines, but books. I'm not particularly a fan of Dirty South music, but there's this funny song called "Read a (#$$&%!#@&!#$) book that's quite direct. I hope to read about more Asian characters who can inspire women as well. 'Hope someone can suggest some good reads.

I believe it was May 1st that my friend Magdalena and I marched in the Legalization for Immigrants March in Chicago. We were chanting in support of legalization for illegal immigrants. Remember at some point we were all immigrants. I don't want to vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. I was hoping Hillary Clinton, a woman would be voted into office. But I feel the more and more I learn, it's a double-headed dragon. I'm not really into political ideologies, I feel action and acts of integrity and charity go way above labels such as Democrat, Republican, Communist, or Capitalist. Humanity, not politics, gets the RIGHT job done.

Evita Peron was not an elected politician, but she did more for the people with the support of Juan Peron than the elected officials ever attempted to do -- she built schools, churches, and really made an impact on the Argentian people in the short time before she died of illness.

For the most part, the march and the rally was excellent. There were speeches by all different nationalities coming together. Mayor Daley made a speech relating his Irish ancestry to the plight of the Mexican people. I was very proud when a Filipino spokesperson addressed the crowd in Spanish and taught the crowd the Tagalog word, Mabuhay, which means "Live!" Some issues that really struck me were the lack of opportunities illegal high school graduates have. Even if they are valedictorians, they cannot attend the college or university of their choice, all because of their lack of 9 numbers of social security. Veterans of the Iraq war wanted the Army to stop recruiting at the minority high schools in which illegal Mexican immigrants and other Latinos are given very little choice for financial opportunities as to their options after high school. Sometimes recruits are offered legalization, but they never see those papers when they are killed on the front line of battle. To keep a long story short, I believe the USA should be open to anyone who is working to create a better life for his/her family and that opportunity should be available to all. When the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, couldn't the native Americans have considered that illegal immigration? When the Spaniards landed on Florida, were they not invading the land of the native Americans? Furthermore to prove my point, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War in 1848 ceded Mexican lands to the US. In other words, Mexicans aren't crossing the border, the border crossed them. Some of us Asian Americans' great grandparents or grandparents were probably illegal at some point. For example, Mei Li in the Flower Drum Song -- the whole movie is centered on her arranged marriage as an illegal Chinese immigrant in the United States who finds love and a new culture in the film. Luckily for myself, my father joined the US Navy and I've always been completely legal. But for the people who aren't, I must inform you that there are families out there who are being separated by "ice" raids in areas such as Waukegan, close to where I live in Lake County. The point is we're all here together and we better make the most of it and welcome everyone who wants to be American that opportunity. There was one musical group who stood out: Kinto Sol. There are so many stars out in the media, many of whom are ethnic. Where were they when we needed their voices at this march? Kinto Sol was there as was Rage Against the Machine. And many props to their courage and support! P.S. Ricky Martin is in support of immigrants (: So he rocks!

I've decided to keep this blog/diary of mine devoid of music promotions stuff, 'cos that's what my myspace page and
migente. com page is for. (I'm still very new on migente and rarely update it. But cool.) Instead I've chosen to voice my thoughts and really provide a social commentary to the world around me. Things that trip out... people looking for controversy to draw attention to themselves in an egotistical manner when there are real controversies out there in the world... celebrities or non-celebrities aka celebrity wannabes who do crazy things and act crazy when there are real people out there with emotional and mental issues...

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 4/04/08   "Experience at Native Flute Circle"

Hello ATO,

I am so happy to have made new friends at the native flute circle. I have never performed in a museum before in my life. And I felt so honored to share my gifts and hear the gifts of the native flutists... It filled my soul with a new appreciation for music. Kevin O'Neill from Concept Studios came to videotape. He should be compiling a video of the performance at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian soon. Working with Rob has taught me about the spirit of music... Later on that nite my mgr. Ray told me he got a letter from Six Flags Great America and I'll be performing there on Saturday, May 24th. I'll keep you updated on the radio airplay on WRLR 98.3 FM... Oh and random... I was checkin' out Lanie's blog and wow she is a darn good writer. How does one express herself so sassily and so precisely? Meow! Me likes.

I just wanted to share with you what Rob had to say. I'll fill in w/ video once Kevin O'Neill sends it to me (:

Comments from Native Flute Circle

Aho All,

Just a brief note about last night at the Flute Circle.

Guia and Tommy came to share their music with the our circle and I had the opportunity to appear with them (playing the flute) in one of their songs. They actually performed two songs for the group and it was just wonderful.

I don’t know if I was the only one who noticed ... but there was just an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm in the room all night ... and nobody really wanted to leave. It seemed like we could have gone on for hours longer. I think this whole experience lifted everyone’s spirits and pumped us full of energy. It was great and I hope everyone had as good a time as I did.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 4/02/08   "From the Train to the Airwaves"

Thank you to station mgr. Ben Richards of WRLR 98.3 FM for playing "Snake Charmer" this past Sunday on the air! Thank you to John Marcus of WRLR for requesting my tracks for regular rotation!

Listen to WRLR 98.3 FM! WRLR plays "Snake Charmer" by Guia Rivera on the air.
Thank you WRLR for your support!

I am so happy at the sound of airplay! My mgr. Ray received a message from Ben the station mgr. at WRLR 98.3 FMand he played my song Sunday on the air at WRLR. I am in full support of their station. I'm really happy he is diggin' my song "Snake Charmer."

I'm about to head on the train. Half of my life is spent riding the train. It's a pity but I don't know how to drive a car. Seriously I'm really bad at it.

This week we've pretty much been busy building a relationships with businesses (local and national).

I emailed a very special Latino & hiphop celebrity from New York City about co-headlining a show together projected for circa August. He is interested, dependent on his commitments in August. My mgr. Ray and I were trying to do the event in May, but I still have to get a music video together to market the event and to market to people in general. We're just trying to get the details straight for that! I will reveal the location once details are settled (:

But for now, we're still in the planning process. The goal is to fill this venue that we've selected to 3000 capacity.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/27/08   "HECTIC!"

It's been a hectic week in and out of my sponsors Mario Tricoci. Stopped by Helen Yi. Helen Yi is so sophisticated with her taste & style. She just knows exactly what she wants. I've had a great experience working with Tricoci. Touched base with Tita Alpha of Hataw Pinoy Chicago TV. Turns out the episode aired on Easster Sunday, April 23rd. HPCTV's really lookin out for me. And I fully support their initiative. Man I'm so proud to be Filipino! Pinay na pinay ako. My uncles saw me on TV and my aunt saw me in the newspaper. They said they were proud. That felt really good.

Here I am in The Filipino American Community Builder
(insert press clipping)

http://www. aacbnews. com/entertainment. htm

I consider it a good omen that Manny Pacquiao is on the cover for a Las Vegas victory!!!! YYYAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! Another reason to be proud to be Filipino.

I don't know this week. I've been having this amazing feeling about my identity as a Filipino and Asian American. When I hear Bebot by the Black Eyed Peas, my boyfriend/mgr starts chiming in when I'm dancing to that song... If you don't know what Bebot is, youtube it.0

My managers Eric and Ray and I have been juggling stuff between the three of us. (Ray's my mgr. and my boyfriend - yes my boyfriend.)

Tomorrow's the big shoot. I changed photographers to Bboy B aka Alberto Trevin of the RedEye/Tribune. My Uncle Anthony, Anthony Andaleon will be videotaping the photoshoot and what not.

Next week I get to perform at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian cos Robin Miller my friend who plays native flute invited Tommy and me for an intimate group performance. It's a historical setting so I'm pretty excited man!

Yahhhh... I'm really into history and the roots of the heritage of the land. I think we people can learn a lot from Native American culture.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/22/08   "Busy Week"

hiphop is number one in his life, so he says when he likes to get angry with me. and i'm not buying it. so he can have his hiphop and eat it too. hiphop is not a bad thing, hiphop can be a good thing, it's jus with him it has become this overwhelming obsession that i jus cannot handle. and yet he says he wants to marry one day? hmmm. i don't think so.

i wised up. and if patience is a virtue. then i will be patient for something worth being patient for.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/17/08   "Visual Music Video Shoot"

   AHOY MATIE!

BLOG: Visual's Music Video Shoot was a blast!

Bboy Ray (my boyfriend - yes, we did get back together) and I were invited by my other manager Eric Castillo (hiphop named: Lead One) to be a part of Visual's video shoot last night. We were not prepared. And so Leo the director well he let me wear a shirt from the hiphop boutique we were shooting in. Darn I wish I would have brought foundation, etc. Visual's video "What I'm On" is coming out in the summertime. Visual is one of my favorite emcees from Chicago because he expresses sincere humility, realness, and honesty in his work and in his character. I am absolutely in love with the lights on the set... my face lights up and it brings out the best in me. There's no other place in the world that I feel more comfortable than on these video shoots/sets. It was so much fun hanging on the set w/ Visual and the whole crew! Leo Flores, the director and producer, asked my boyfriend Bboy Ray and I to play a couple on Visual's set. Hmm, imagine that. I'm very territorial when it comes to my boyfriend -- and it was really awesome to have the opportunity to show some of the girls in the hiphop community that Ray is MY man. I felt really sweet when he held my hand on the camera (: It was interesting to see filmmaker Leo Flores in action -- very precise and detailed. Leo Flores is heading up Chicago Music Project. The site www. chicagomusicproject. com coming soon!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/14/08   "Fun Morning at Windsor"

BLOG: Fun morning working with stylist at Windsor

Fashion is a lot of fun! Corporate at Windsor asked Jessica to come in and she styled the pieces for my upcoming photoshoot for Thirteen Minutes magazine! I had a fun morning working with the stylist. I got lucky! The first outfit I tried on worked out perfectly. Imagine that (:

Girls love clothes, fashion, and it's the perfect remedy for heartbreak. I'm not a material girl, but a girl can't deny she loves rockin' a hot fit. This is my first time working with a real stylist... Jessica was great!

I think the fun part about working in the music business is that we get to work with fashion people (: It's great to start the morning with a fun activity.

I love what I do. I think I've learned a piece of individuality. Women should build on their careers; it builds a sense of independence and strength in purpose and it's just plain fun to have a career versus a job.

*******

My boyfriend and I may get back together sometime in the future 'cos he said he wants to be back together today. But I just need some space to be me and have my freedom of expression -- just for a little bit. I have to get back to the me I became before I was him. Nonetheless our relationship together has changed me, for the better and for the worse. But I just need to get back to the things I love to do without any relationship stress. Once I've found that peace, hopefully we'll go back, 'cos I would've grown. I hope my bonds with my friends will grow (: My Auntie Melanie says she's always be my fan. That really meant a lot to me. I am a fan of Auntie Melanie; she teaches me hula dancing. She invited me to perform with the dance troupe for a ballroom gala, but I'm not sure if we'll be in Miami at the time. But hey it doesn't hurt to check out the practice sessions.
  Boys, breakups, blah!!!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/12/08   "TV Star?"

BLOG "Re: TV Star?"

Hi ATO!!! Steve asked me if I'm going to be a TV Star? I'm not sure which I like better: the stage which allows you to interact with the live audience or the way the lights on a tv or movie set transport you to another state of mind. Hmmm... I'd have to say the best part of being in show business is not about aiming for fortune or fame, but it's all about the ... magic... We are able to create magic in the moments on film, on camera... This year I think I'm more fascinated by the magic of the camera... The stage is all to real for me, and I would prefer the fantasy of lights, camera, action -- even when you're using a green screen like we did last Friday.

Catch me on Hataw Pinoy Chicago TV on Channel 41 KBC-TV WOCH-CA. The episode airs Sunday, March 16th at 1-2pm. (Online viewers stay tuned! HPCTV will be posting the episode online here at: http://www.suncastv.com/page_hpc.html)

March 07, 2008 - Magandang gabi! I just finished taping a segment with Hataw Pinoy Chicago TV this past Friday evening. It was so awesome to connect with the Filipino community. I really enjoyed my experience at HPCTV! Thanks to Tita Alpha (host) for interviewing me and making those yummy ensaymadas and to Tatay Leo (producer) for making all of us feel at home! Tita Alpha really helped me to connect with my identity and she showed the musicians Robin and Tommy and my manager Ray our Pilipino culture. Her questions really got to the heart of who I am. And her energy and warmth was contagious! Tatay Leo's a sweetheart too. Robin Miller did a great job on the native flute, his very special gift. And thanks to Tommy for performing on the acoustic guitar with me... I felt like I really belonged... And I felt really comfortable on the television set... It was a lot of fun!!! The greatest part about being in the music business I believe is meeting great people of purpose like Tatay Leo and Tita Alpha. Most especially, I enjoyed the sense of community and I feel really proud that Hataw Pinoy Chicago TV highlights the successes of many Pilipino Americans breaking into the US mainstream. Ako ay Pilipino! Salamat sa HPCTV!

Now my boyfriend and I were driving home on our way from the television shoot. And we came across a movie being filmed in our neighborhood, "Humboldt Park" starring actor John Leguizamo about three blocks from my boyfriend's house. I walked ahead of my manager and his friend. And I asked the girls looking in the distance, so we have to stay behind here if we want to check out the set. I was curious, and I couldn't see anything from where they were standing which was too many yards away from the scene. So I moved my way closer to the set. I just started walking like something magical was pulling me. I like the feeling of the lights and magic of movie, tv, and photoshoots. Then an assistant director pulled me closer, and said, Do you want to be closer? Here you can see from there. So he let me stand with the film crew. I don't know, I think my boyfriend was not able to get past security. I whispered to a few people on the set, and an assistant director named Mono Lito asked if I was an actress -- oh how flattered I felt, and yeah that would be cool to be an actress. I told them I'm a singer, but I just came back from a television shoot. And then John Leguizamo looked at me from the set. It was super freezing outside. I thought I should probably go home 'cos it was so cold. But then the crew asked if I wanted to go inside the house (Leguizamo was on the front lawn of the house). I asked, can my boyfriend and his friend come too? Then I realized, where were they? They were calling me to go 'cos it was cold and they couldn't get past security. So I rushed to my boyfriend and left the set. That was the coolest experience I had last weekend -- all in the same nite with the good vibes from the television set at Hataw Pinoy Chicago TV (:

Writer Jenny Baranick from Thirteen Minutes just interviewed me for my very first ever national high fashion magazine feature in Thirteen Minutes last Thursday. I really look forward to this opportunity to be someone Asian Americans can be proud of. I am proud of my identity as an Asian American and feel Thirteen Minutes presents the beauty of our diverse cultures with true elegance in the context of Mai the editor-in-chief is really great and I am really excited to be part of a movement of Asian American artists in the music business. This month I feel like I've found my place and purpose and what I'm motivated to do to encourage more diversity in the mainstream media.

Let's see... I'm going to Windsor tomorrow. It's a boutique around where I live. I'm going to get to wear some of their clothes for the photoshoot on March 28th. Awesome! I look forward to meeting the store manager and finding pieces for the photoshoot for Thirteen Minutes, I've got coming up.

I've been getting in touch with some of my friends in New York City. It's nice to know I've got people to relate to, especially other women. I told Shakti, my friend, she is an awesome singer (www.myspace.com/shaktionline), thank you for giving me awesome advice on my guy problems. Sometimes I wonder if us women, like my girlfriends and myself included, analyze our male situations more than the males care to analyze us. I think it's a girl thing I don't know. What's cool about Shakti is that she's totally different from a lot of female singers I've met, Shakti's genuine and sincere and she's helpful; she's more collaborative than cutthroat competitive. The thing that I like about Shakti is that she is really radiant and carries good vibes all around her. With her music, she incorporates the beauty of her Indian culture and the style of singing her grandmother taught her. I have another friend who is a singer named Ely Aly in Texas. She's really pretty, beautiful eyes, She was the other Heineken Estrella winner from Texas and we met in Miami for the Billboard Latin Music Awards http://www.myspace.com/elyaly. She's got an alternative take to her music which I think is really improv and creative. I wish I could make more female friends who are singers and collaborate with more ladies onstage.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/02/08   "Native Flute Player"

BLOG: Native Flute Player

Last nite truly lifted my spirits. I had the opportunity to work with an awesome native flute player named Robin Miller. His Native American name is Wind at His Back. Robin, Tommy and I were practicing for a live performance of my song "Nevada" at Tommy's. Tommy held it down on the guitar. What was truly fascinating was the way Robin's native flute resonated in harmony with Tommy's guitar playing and my singing. I felt as a trio of instruments we were evoking the spirit of music. I can't wait 'til the final copy includes Rob's native flute playing on the final recording of "Nevada" in the finished album "Emerge."

Tommy had tons of questions about Wind at His Back and about the native flute. I chose the native flute because when I wrote the song "Nevada," I was inspired by Native American culture. After I wrote the song, I searched and searched for the perfect instrument to really give a voice to the song. I found the tribes who live in Nevada are the Navajo, the Hopi, and the Paiute. And I came across the recordings of an instrument special to Native American heritage called the native flute. Robin explained to Tommy that no native flute is the same - native flutes vary in the length of the flute, the size of the holes, and the wood they are made of also creates a unique sound from the next. Each native flute has its own spirit because each native flute is made from a tree, a living thing. With the native flute, we tell the stories of the native people of this land. The native flute is an important part of American heritage and American music and should be cherished as an important voice in the great story of this country of ours.

And so last nite I was really filled with the spirit of Wind at His Back. I was pleased at Tommy's curiosity and eagerness to learn about the native flute. There are native flute circles all over Illinois. You can visit one and learn how to play. Here is a sample of native flute music from Janice Trytten: www.sunflowers.net

I hope you will get a chance to hear Wind at His Back on the native flute in our performance of my song "Nevada."

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 3/01/08   "Lemon Light"

The story of "lemon light"

...the girl guia forgot about the boy soulrane for awhile. she loved to sing but forgot about singing. she loved to dance but forgot about dancing. her father said, you've gotta make a living. she now belonged to a prince named joe who loved her very much as she loved him. but joe's heart changed. guia was heartbroken. her prince named joe found another princess to be with. so one day guia called soulrane in vegas. soulrane made guia happy again and they filled each other's hearts with lovers' fantasies over the telephone line. soulrane told her of his new life in las vegas. soulrane was working as a stockboy in a flashy hotel in las vegas, and guia was working as a salesgirl in a ritzy department store in downtown chicago. and so guia flew to vegas with all her christmas savings. it was early january. it snowed and snowed in chicago. she called soulrane, i'll be late, my flight's delayed. he said, i'll wait for you forever. guia looked outside the window of the airplane. soulrane felt excitement. his heart fluttered. the girl and the boy would finally get to be together! the young girl was amazed at the sight below. neon lights covered the glittering town of las vegas. she stepped into the airport. there were slot machines everywhere. she looked around for soulrane. he said, guia, i'm over here. they ran to each other. soulrane was so glad to see her. for the first time, soulrane and guia had a chance to fall in love. soulrane told guia he was a deejay now. his name was getting bigger and bigger all around the town. soulrane showed her all his records. he said, only real deejays use records. he showed her his paintings. she said, you're the best painter i know. he took her to a bboy practice. and her heart was filled with the joy of dancing once again. for the first time in a long time in las vegas, it snowed. the boy said, you brought the snow with you, guia.

the boy took her to his favorite mountain. it was a secret spot only he knew. she said to the boy, it's beautiful. they could see the whole city of las vegas in its splendor in the desert. the snow turned to rain. and when it rained, you could feel the boy's soul at peace. the demons stirring from his past finally ceased. she looked at him and said, one day you are destined to be a great painter, and i will tell your story. he said, i know you'll tell it best. she said, i felt every raindrop fall on the mountain as you stared at the falling rain, i felt every teardrop you were crying, just to see you smile again, and deep inside i know your soul is raining, you are truly free when your soul rains. soulrane was a child of the desert. guia was a child of the sea. she was born miles away in the pacific ocean. yet the two lovers had crossed this paths in the plains of illinois. with her flight, she brought water to fill his soul in the desert.

and so the girl had to say goodbye. she returned to the ice cold streets of the windy city. the world just wasn't the same. all the old saleswomen in the department store worried about their young salesgirl. the girl wanted to stand with the boy on his mountain in the desert. she called him on the phone a month later. but it was too late. his heart sank. he tried to hide his feelings. he knew it could never be. she could never live his life. and he could never live hers.

but the girl began to dance. her soul began to sing. she kept her spirits up, hoping they would meet again. then the girl started learning a new dance. it was a dance that came from the deserts of the middle east. she discovered the beauty of bellydance. the girl began to feel more like a woman.

but she was not yet a woman. so she was sad when she found she could not keep the boy's heart in the same place. she heard from an old lady in las vegas he was spending time with a gogo dancer. soulrane's heart sank again. he thought of guia from time to time. he could hear guia's words in his memory. but the girl thought her boy had forgotten. the girl thought, maybe if i'm a gogo dancer he will fall in love with me, maybe if i'm like his gogo dancer in the neon lights in las vegas, maybe if i wasn't a girl, maybe if i was a woman, maybe if i had my name in bright lights, maybe if i was the best gogo dancer in las vegas, he would love me more than this gogo dancer of his. and so the girl began to imagine herself in a fuschia corset dancing on the box. she imagined everyone in the club watching her, especially her soulrane. she imagined with the stride of a woman, she was the best gogo dancer in all of las vegas...

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 2/26/08   "Risk Takers and The Story of Nevada"

                                 Right:  Guia circa 2006

"The Year of the Rat is for Risk-Takers"

People always want to bank on a sure thing. People always want to work with what they are familiar with. Try something new. Take a risk. In 2002, I fell in love with a bboy named Soulrane. He then became a dj. I didn't know what I was doing; I didn't care where it would lead to. All I knew was that I was wrapped up in the moment. It led to heartbreak then growth. But my point is I learned a lot from taking risks. Now I have brilliant songs like "Nevada," "Snake Charmer," and "Graffiti" because I risked my heart and fell in love.

Similarly, in the music business, greater rewards come from those who are willing to explore beyond the safety zone. Try unchartered territories. Shakira is said to have a unique stamp on her music. You can't really place it in a certain era. Justin Timberlake is always creating groundbreaking music and trying something new with his image and his sound.

Fear is our greatest deterrent. We must be fearless. We must be innovative. The Year of the Rat is about being the first in line because the rat was the first to reach the finish line in the great race for Jade Emperor. Be a trend-setter, not a follower.

The Story of Nevada

"Nevada" by Guia Rivera is dedicated to Las Vegas

A long time ago... A girl named Guia fell in love with a boy named Soulrane. They met in Champaign (Illinois, that is). The boy was dancing in a bboy circle. And the girl was writing poems at a table on the side. He came up to the girl to ask her name. And she replied, Dance with me. He said, You're pretty. And the girl blushed. So they started dancing to the rhythm of a reggae song. He came to her dorm the next day. Sadly she had to leave for the Jersey shore. She told him she would return to Champaign after the summer passed. But would their love last? He wrote her letters of lovers' fantasies. And she replied, Will you take me to Las Vegas with you? Will you sleep under the stars with me? He said, Yes. After the summer passed, the girl returned to Champaign. But the boy was nowhere to be found. They said he had already left for the desert, already on his journey. And so he never came. That boy Soulrane...

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 2/25/08

Hello To My Friends on ATO,

"It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees."
-- Emiliano Zapata

This isn't just a favorite quote. I live by this motto. My friend Chris Devins says I need to tone down my ambition. I can't help it. I'm a very direct person. I ask for what I want in the open. At times, it works at a disadvantage but at other times, I'd prefer to bring the truth into the light. I used to be a retail salesperson. And I feel in selling anything, pointing out the facts are your strongest sales draw. People who are more discreet in their approach, it is their intentions I fear. I have my guard up when it comes to smooth characters. I feel a woman should never have to apologize for being ambitious. I feel we should never fear ambitious people. If it is my youth, if it is my vigor, there should be nothing to apologize for. It is those who sell their souls for ambition whom we should fear. As far as I know all my morals and integrity are in tact.

It takes me about two days to fully recover and spring back from a setback. Maybe I'm not Ms. Eurovision Spain. But a 13 Minutes fashionista I wil be. So I was at Vernon Hills yesterday. Mario Tricoci's publicist was ever so awesome to sched an appointment for me for a style consulation at the salon. As confident as the most confident may seem, it's just in my indulgent nature to want to serve. Naturally I was a little nervous to meet my sponsor Tricoci. I wanted them to feel proud and I wanted meet their expectations. I came in fresh, without makeup in the natural state of my wavy, coarse hair. The manager Amber greeted me very professionaly and warmly. Then she introduced me to Makayla, Tricoci makeup artist, Kelly, Tricoci hair stylist, and Jen, Tricoci hair colorist. Makayla knew what she wanted to do right away. The goal was to create a sophisticated look. I showed them my ideas for the photoshoot and the consultation went well. My first time going to Tricoci when my sister got me a haircut there last November, I felt so spoiled getting a haircut! They just know what they're doing there and they're very professional.

When I get tired of hearing a lot of the pop crap out there, pardonez mon francais, out on the radio, I retreat to more ethnic music. There's just no mistaking the percussion and bouncy rhythms. Reggae puts me in a gleeful mood. Or it puts me in a mood to just feel the love. There's something about the soul of reggae that makes you feel at peace. My friend Magda and I go crazy pysched when we check out a reggae venue. One of my favorite voices in reggae is Jah Cure. Reggae melodies are different from r & b; the notes float like the island breeze; in r & b, it's more about power and doing vocal stunts. But with reggae, the voice becomes an instrument guiding the curve of your body to the music. You just wanna whine your body you know and you imagine the waves and dancing in the sand. I remember when a Trinidadian man in Queens introduced me to soca music. Soca just makes your body wanna jump, your feet as light as the sunny island mood. You just can't be stiff when you dance to it. The Trinidadian man says alot of people confuse soca and reggae but he's pretty proud of soca since it began in Trinidad and Tobago. My friends Purest Form NYC are breaking into the new baile funk movement which comes from Brazil. I've probably danced to samba music two times. My friend Ryan took me to dance samba at the HotHouse in Chicago which is unfortunately closed down now. (Luckily I got to perform at a salsa event there before it closed down.) I honestly didn't know how to dance samba at all. But as soon as I heard the rhythm, my bottom just started shaking and your feet just get excited to feel the rhythm of the drums. Soulja Boy and other commercial hiphop is cool. It's alright. But I like everything freeform when it comes to dance. Sometimes with hiphop I feel like there are set moves everyone should know, and there's room for creativity. But with samba and reggae, it's not about line or form or other voluntary movements. With samba and reggae, your body feels compelled to free itself.

Being in the music business, it's difficult the business from the music. But sometimes, I just want to be all about the art. I used to say, "I seek music in its purest form." My goal this year is to find the medium between artistic and commercial interests. I started out in New York City a naive artist true to the craft. Then I began becoming more pop oriented, caring so much what people thought, if it was a hit. But to tell you the truth, I would prefer to listen to non-hits right now. It seems hits are so contrived to fit a pattern and format. Why not poetry and motion? From December 2006 til this day, I was really very jaded with what the industry does to create a constant awareness that an artist's worth is only that of a commodity these days. But I'm slowly reawakening to an instinct I had repressed for so long. Yay! Back to songwriting... Inspiration here I come!

Throughout my ups and downs, Steve over here's been giving me a lot of tips. I really appreciate his positivity and loyal support. I'm one of those people who's ready to leap into the next step... Growth comes with change. "Camaleon" = cambiar.

Love,

Hello To My Friends on ATO,

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 1/31/08

Hello To My Friends on ATO,

Last night I came across a minor glitch. But this technicality prevents me from competing in Eurovision to represent Spain.

The rule I recently read is that I have to have been a resident of Spain for at least two years. If I had known this in December, I wouldn't have rallied all this support from you guys.

I tried to come up with a solution and requested to Eurovision Spain and Eurovision in the place of being a contestant, I asked if I could perform in Eurovision Spain as just as a performer, so as not to present a conflict of interest to the contestants in Spain.

So don't give up hope guys! I think if Eurovision sees this as a positive opportunity, I may be able to just perform before Eurovision and Spain instead of to compete. I would be happy to do just that in order to thank you for your support for the past two months and to show you that your vote means something.

I'm waiting to see what Eurovision and RTVE says. Thank you!

Love,
Guia Rivera

Come Together!!

Happy New Year ATO!

Is this a great day or what, today I walked to the post office to mail my press kit requested my managers Judith, Eric, and me of 13 Minutes, the first Asian Bicultural magazine in the United States. Mai, the editor-in-chief is awesome! I say everyone here should put a 13 Minutes Banner on their website. We've gotta support this national magazine which is showing high fashion, entertainment, culture and diversity in the national magazine market at Borders, Barnes & Noble and other select newsstands across the US. Already a success in select newsstands across the country and soon to become available internationally, 13 Minutes is going to be the premier publication of its kind exposing our culture to the world.

I love reading 13 Minutes!

As Asian Americans we have to come together by supporting each other's businesses and supporting our artists. Being Filipino American, I think it's beautiful to connect with Chinese Americans, Thai Americans, Japanese Americans, Korean Americans, and so many different people on this site.

To start the New Year on ATO, I think we should thank Steve for building this home for all of us. We all have goals and dreams, and this is one of the greatest sites ever. I entered the music business with the intent of being an Asian American who Asian American people can look up to. I embarked on this journey because I realized there weren't enough Asian Americans in the arts, and because I felt I wanted to break stereotypes because Asians and Asian Americans are all so diverse. And here ATO finds me and I'm like... Wow! Now I don't feel like I'm in this movement all on my own. I've got new friends and I'm meeting new artists who are also working to break stereotypes and to fill that void in the arts to bring Asian Americans into the spotlight.

So big up to Steve! If it weren't for Steve, we wouldn't have all met each other on Asian Talent Online (:

We have to keep our fantasies alive and we have to keep growing in our dreams. Why? Why, everything we can touch or feel is first conceived in a dream. Here's to dreams!

So let's show the world what we've got!

In my personal goals, I am studying Spanish about 5 days a week on my own. I'm trying to study French 3 times a week. I've been watching a lot of old Marilyn Monroe films where they fully utilized dance, artistic themes ..ed sets, and drama to create an amazing stage show. In this modern era, I feel we're relying too much on pyrotechnics and flashy effects. In the golden age of cinema, they made MAGIC. I want to make magic! like that. I want to bring you something classic, something timeless.

Throughout life we are students, we have to be aware of the new age in which we exist as well as the magic of golden days past. We have to know our identities. We have to know our cultures. We should strive to understand other cultures as well to build the bridge that makes up our rainbow on Earth.

We have to wise up. With the transition of the music industry into the digital era, we artists have the advantage and can make demands that we never would have been able to with the old structure.

The age of woman is coming. And I'm voting for Hillary Clinton. No longer will I be held down. This ain't a man's world anymore. We are all created equal. You've got the power. Vote!

Remember this, opportunities are given by God. It is our job to build on what we are given, emphasizing our talents and strengthening where we fall short. But God helps you alot along the way. He offers a sincere smile from the postman that lets you know that package is gonna be delivered with care. My strengths I've found are building great business relationships, my creativity and originality in presenting my performances whether singing or dancing and writing my songs, as well as my relentless determination to never take "no" for an answer.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share my experiences here on Asian Talent Online. Much success to all the artists on this site. We're comin' up y'all! My oh my I can't wait to hear what they're going to call the new rise of Asian American musicians, celebrities, and bands in the media. Keep the movement going!

Mabuhay! (That's Tagalog for "Long live!")

Nominate Guia!!

Hi everyone,

If you are a Guia Rivera fan, I need your help! Nominate me to compete for in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade, Serbia! Past winners of Eurovision Song Contest you might know include Celine Dion who is French Canadian and won for Switzerland in 1988. This is the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2005: Elena Paparizou, a famous Greek singer born in Sweden ... She is truly a great singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWe0nKho8DI

I would love to compete and rock everyone's socks off!!!

I've been working hard trying to get a spot in the Eurovision Song Contest. We have American Idol, where we compete to win a prize and to be exploited on reality tv for entertainment's purpose, in order to get things such as a record deal or a cash prize and exposure. But in the Eurovision Song Contest, it's different and more dignified. This is something i believe in, something that i would love to be a part of just to see singers compete to represent their country and to see the beauty of different cultures through music. There could be no greater honor than being in a tournament for the love of music.

*** PLEASE WRITE FEDERICO LLANO (FEDERICO.LLANO@RTVE.ES) TO NOMINATE GUIA RIVERA TO REPRESENT SPAIN IN EUROVISION 2008 IN BELGRADE.***

Wouldn't it be cool to root for me in the greatest international singing tournament there is? It would really be a blessing and the greatest christmas present ever if you could get through to this man in charge in Spain:
Federico Llano can be reached at this email address:(federico.llano@rtve.es).

Merry Christmas! And don't forget to cherish your families and friends.

Gracias (Spanish) * Salamat (Tagalog - Philippine) * Thank you (English) * Efkharisto (Greek) * Merci (French) * Grazie (Italian)

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 12/05/07   "Photo Shoot With Oscar Lopez"

Photo: Oscar Lopez

Photoshoot With Oscar Lopez - Chicago Sun-Times

Hi everyone,

i had the opportunity to work with oscar lopez, a photographer who shoots for the chicago sun-times... he's very artistic in his black and white photos and takes really great concert photos as well. he's very talented, exact and knows precisely what he wants in a shoot. he wanted to bring out a sexy vamp in me. me, i'm kinda coquettish more like marilyn monroe and far from the vixen angelina jolie-type of woman. but hopefully he found some shots to convey the vamp look he was going for. it's always helpful to try something different and extend a facet of yourself to discover something that you never knew before about yourself. i suppose in an artistic sense, you've gotta submit yourself as clay to a master potter. it indeed was a challenge and i hope oscar didn't mind too much that i was just trying to get into the new swing of things. it's usually easy for me to adjust into new roles, but yesterday i just felt i had a lot of my mind on the music tip and where i wanted to travel with my music as well as thoughts on my personal life.

i can't wait to see how the shoot with oscar turned out. i was kinda moody yesterday. most of the time i like to smile. but i'm glad oscar was really patient with me though. hmm... how my moodiness affected it, i don't know. we'll see in 8 days how the shoot turned out. so be looking out for that on my myspace page. in the meantime, my boyfriend snapped some photos of me after the professional shoot with oscar, and not bad for the digital camera my boyfriend used.

this month i've got another photoshoot coming up with paul natkin who has photographed like celebrities for two decades for major news publications around the united states (www.natkin.net).

as far as the inside scoop on photographers and photo work, sometimes i'm in the mood to shoot and really upbeat and sometimes i just feel really contemplative, like in a dreamy mood and out of focus from reality.

Happy Holidays!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 12/01/07   "Chi-Rock Nation"

Hi everyone,

Tonite my Tribute to Chi-Rock Nation performance w/ dancer Eilleen Mallary rocked!

I got lots of positive feedback.  People came up to me saying the performance was beautiful, dramatic, and "Guia,  that was really entertaining, and "Guia, when is the next time you will be performing?"  And it felt great to rock the crowd in a way they didn't expect -- by givin' 'em a slow jam and creative presentation.  Eilleen Mallary was great!!!  She really set the mood and brought a different flavor by showcasing her dance talents.  Thanks to Bravemonk for helping me with my performance prop.  Here's a secret to spill:  I learned tonite that the way to get an audience's attention is not by being loud, but by understating with subtlety.  I was really happy that my friend Magdalena went; it was so fun hangin' with her and seeing all the people at the event.  Magda and I really liked PRism's performance.  Dale reggaeton!

Also, event organizer Bboy Ray sacrificed his time, money and effort to serve the community.  He along with everyone who helped him did a phenomenal job.  Everyone had fun!  It was for all ages.  And I have never seen so many bboy circles in my life.  And huge ones at that.  A Tribute to Chi-Rock Nation as a whole was successful and widely attended due to the efforts of Bboy Ray.  If you don't live in Chicago and couldn't attend, you missed a great time (:  Wish you were there!  Gosh!  I love performing and owning the stage.

Happy Holidays!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 11/19/07   "GUIA GOES GREEN"

Eddo Photography Chicago 2007

Hi everyone,

I hope everybody will enjoy the holidays coming up.  It's certainly a special time of the year for family and friends.  I'd like to thank my friends and family for being a part of my life!

I have some great news.  I'm going green!  I attended a forum on how musicians can help the environment in October.  And I met great people in the music industry who are concerned about our environment.  Now I've teamed up with Live It Green for Tunes For Trees.  Basically, by my being a Tunes For Trees artist, for every ten songs you buy, you plant a tree.  So if you buy the Lemon Light EP/Guia Rivera on itunes, a tree is planted after ten songs are sold.  My motto is: "Buy the EP and plant a tree!"  You can link directly to buy my single at the itunes store by clicking here .  You can find out more about my involvement with Tunes for Trees at
http://www.myspace.com/guiarivera . I think it's cool how Live It Green is giving artists the opportunity to combine music with environmental activism through Tunes for Trees.  I had the opportunity to help clean up the beach on Lake Michigan because my friend Lady Lynn invited me to join in.  So Tunes for Trees fits in with a lot of my volunteer goals.  And more and more I'm starting to take steps in which I can help the environment as well as encourage others to do the same.  This is a great way to re-plant more trees and make up for all the trees that are going to be cut down for the holidays.  More info at www.tunesfortrees.com !

You can also catch my PulpMag interview in which Alleyne from Toronto, Ontario, Canada gets personal with me and my music.  I'll be featured in the December Issue at www.pulpmag.net .  The Toronto-based publication reaches readers worldwide.  So check me out Hearing Aid (the music section) of PulpMag in December.  I'll keep you posted once it's in so you can check it out!

I'd also like to notify everyone that due to personal reasons, I will be cancelling my performance on November 30.  I apologize for the cancellation as I know some fans were looking forward to my performance with professional dancer Eilleen Mallary.  But I'll be working on new photos in December with a couple brilliant photographers so stay tuned for brand new pictures.  And I promise exciting stuff coming up for 2008.  Hmmm... what's up my sleeve?  Guess you'll just have to keep checking
http://myspace.com/guiarivera to find out.

P.S. I'll leave you with an interesting fact: today at 10 pm I am the number one entry on the google search engine for the word "guia." As you know, my first name "guia" in Spanish also means guide, telephone directory, or map.  So
http://www.myspace.com/guiarivera is competing with the Hispanic Telephone Directory and other sites.  Some people pay a couple hundred monthly to be be the number one site on the google search engine for their subject word.  So I feel blessed to be number 1 this week without having to pay a dime.  I've fluctuated between the number 1 entry to number 5 entry among 109 million searches for the word "Guia" since I've noticed.  So tonight the Guia Rivera myspace page beat out the Hispanic Telephone Directory, lol.

Happy Holidays!

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 11/18/07   "ASIAN BEAUTY"

Asian Beauty

so i'm going to be working with a new awesome photographer who has worked with chicago sun times and other major publications. and his shots are awesome (:

and luckily it so happens tomorrow my sister wants to take me to her hair salon at mario tricoci! so yay i'm really excited 'cos it's my first time getting my haircut at a nice salon. my sis likes to be primped and she loves to look perfect all the time. and i think it'll be fun to try out something she does a lot.

one of my favorite faces is mexican superstar thalia. i love her fresh natural face. and she even has a book called belleza about her makeup secrets that i was reading at borders one time. i don't know much about makeup and usually rely on the makeup artist to do whatever she feels. but this time i want to have more direction on what type of look i want. and so i was like i really like thalia's makeup looks and i think it's awesome how she wants to help women find their outer and inner beauty through her book.

i really don't like it when asian ladies try to pile tons of eyeshadow on their eyes. that's just my personal choice, but hey whatever floats the boat for them. it's as though they'd like to make their eyes appear bigger or to alter the shape. i don't want to make my eyes look bigger, i just want to be happy with their size and shape. i have almond-shaped eyes and i'm proud. almond-shaped eyes just like ann m. martin used to describe claudia in the babysitters club. claudia was the japanese american babysitter in the club, who i could relate to as a teenager. so i was trying to find makeup looks that bring out my eyes and makeup which complements my golden skin tone.

and i kept searching and searching on the internet. it's really hard 'cos i'm not really pale and i'm not really dark. so i'm a golden medium in between. i wish there were more beauty tips for *different types* of asian skin tones. it's like when i search and search, they group asian into like one "asian" type for skin tone. it seems the beauty advice out there is generic and that all asian women have the same skin tone. hopefully as i dig deeper into my search, i'll find what's right for me. i'm sure other asian ladies have had the same problem before.

maybe there are more important things in the world. but for now, i wish there were more articles or beauty advice out there for different skin tones within what they group as asian.

***** i found one line that is very keen to the needs of asian women: zhen beauty cosmetics. but i am so sad 'cos they are only at select retail locations like in hawaii, california, and minnesota. and the netherlands:

http://www.zhenbeauty.com/content_retaillocations.cfm

i'm happy that i've found a line that is made by asian women for asian women (:

***** margaret kimura cosmetics has a line ... she is the author of asian beauty. i'd like to find this book! here's more info on a book just for asian women: http://www.asianbeautybook.com/.

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 11/8/07

i received a comment from a friend and wanted to share my response with you all. w.m. raised a pretty cool question that i found interesting ( : he said i should get a reality show.

i don't really believe in that. i think reality tv shows can destroy a person's life or their concept of reality by making stunts, silly contests, and wierd outlandish behavior a part of reality.

take for instance the walking reality show of britney spears. while it may do well to raise your ratings as a public figure, as a person the effects could be eternally damaging... i do think britney spears music rocks and she is an interesting public figure, but the paparazzi have gone too far intruding into her life. i like kimora lee simmons' personality after watching her reality show. and that was a cool business decision for her. but i prefer to be in this camp of which i agree: christina aguilera who is very secure and in control, says she wants to protect her personal relationships.

not to say that doing a reality show is not a good choice for other people. but then again... at some point, you wonder how real reality shows really are, for real though. i'd have to say the biography of an artist such as ray charles played by jamie foxx is certainly way way real-er compared to a reality show. yes, it's getting to the point that actors are more realistic than reality show divas such as kim kardashian and paris hilton, who seem pretty cool from what i see, but what do i know but what i see?

Guia Rivera -- Blog Update 10/31/07

"i earned my stripes!"

as a freshman in college, i was introduced to hiphop. i was known as the girl who rapped about God. and then people in APAC (Asian Pacific American Coalition) at the University of Illinois have even called me the girl who raps. i remember i used to pen verses and rhymes and it helped flex my songwriting skills even though i would never amount to a serious emcee or hiphop artist. alot of my friends were emcees and they would invite me to a lot of their shows. attending these shows and being surrounded by the hiphop culture has really influenced my music. i am really excited about bringing some different ways to show my take on hiphop subject matter at this upcoming show on friday, november 30 for "denim dilemma/FlyPaper jam." i get to do a guest performance amongst respected amidst the real hiphop celebs. for some reason, it makes me feel better to be part of a collective cause and it makes me feel more fulfilled. also, i hope to bring a more eclectic feel by bringing in my other musical influences outside of hiphop.

and no, i no longer rap.

i hope writing this announcement will educate people who are curious about hiphop beyond media misrepresentation as well as encourage advocates of hiphop and free expression.

(in the meantime, my struggle with getting back into shape continues. on an avg, i work out for about an hour doing cardio at the gym burning 600 calories on an average. i've started eating really healthy. 'been cooking miso soup and thai beef salad em em. including more vegetables and fruits in my diet, i'm slowly becoming healthier. if anybody has any workout tips or cooking tips, please let me know! 'hope we can all motivate each other.

Can someone tell me why?

FoxNews reports in its article "Sales of Rap Albums Take Stunning Nosedive": "But now after 30 years of growing popularity, rap music is now struggling with an alarming sales decline and growing criticism from within about the culture's negative effect on society." (March 21,2007).

What the general public sees on television today is a misconstrued, twisted version of hiphop. What we're missing out on is real hiphop. Meaning the four elements of a culture of a people rich in desire to create social change for the better: breakdancing, graffiti art, turntablism (deejaying), and emceeing. If record labels want to see their sales skyrocketing again, they need to appeal to the youth today, a youth that is more intelligent and innovative with real consumer power. And by the way, did you know that Hiphop is a nation, just like Greece or Turkey, that is recognized by the United Nations upon its establishment this past decade?

The Real Hiphop stands up to the FCC

While you may know 50 Cent and T.I., the real celebrities of hiphop do not degrade women nor send out messages of violence to the youth. Bboy Ray, breakdance pioneer, and Cashus D of the Universal Zulu Nation demand positive programming from the FCC at this hearing held at the Rainbow Push Coalition headquarters on the southside of Chicago (September 20,2007). Check out the youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeEQmUjFMTY

The real celebrities of hiphop are people like Bboy Ray who organizes all-ages programs for the community or Cashus D who tells the FCC what the community really wants on the airwaves. A real hiphop star is Super Inlight, breakdance instructor at the University of Hiphop who teaches kids the discipline and strength it takes to be a great breakdancer. The youth need constructive activities such as breakdancing to stay away from drugs and alcohol. The youth need a community that supports these activities.

FlyPaper Jam/Denim Dilemma

Meet the real celebrities of hiphop on Friday, November 30th at the FlyPaper Jam sponsored by the FlyPaper. Bboy Ray and Cashus D will be present at this event so you can find out how you can support a community that serves the youth. Also as part of FlyPaper Jam, the FlyPaper presents Denim Dilemma (c) 2007, the exhibit that you can't find at any downtown Chicago art gallery. We're featuring masterpieces created by Chicago's greatest graffiti writers. And if you think avant-garde art is at the MOMA or at the Art Institute, think again. Avant-garde art is happening right now and right here in Chicago as we speak. Do you remember the period of Modern Art which we study today? Picasso used his wits to challenge spatial dimensions in art. Van Gogh's brushstroke and memorable perspective on nature and night are some of society's most priceless pieces. That was avant-garde then. This is avant-garde now: Denim Dilemma at FlyPaper Jam on Friday, November 30. Don't miss out on who could be the next Picasso.

The FlyPaper is Chicago's premier hiphop newspaper, which we'll be distributing on Friday, November 30 at the Flypaper Jam/Denim Dilemma. We invite you to pick up a copy at the event! Advertising Inquiries: please contact www.myspace.com/superflypaper.

Don't let hiphop intimidate you. You know you've always been secretly curious to discover one of the elements. I heard you rapping in the car to Eminem, I know you wanna know what it's like to scratch a record on the turntables, I know you wanna go wild and pick up a spraycan to express yourself, and I know you've always wondered how to do those acrobatic moves and classic styles on the dance floor that you've seen those bboys do. At the FlyPaper Jam, you're sure to meet an expert who can show you how.

All four elements of hiphop will be present at the FlyPaper Jam. Enter a continent celebrating music, dance, and art.

Guia Rivera - Inspired By Mariah Carey  10/21/07

as you all know, mariah carey's been a great inspiration for me as a singer. and i'm just singing along to some of her songs right now. and i felt such a joy of singing, it inspired me to blog.

usually i'm really stressed out with all the biznaz stuff in the music biz and what not that it's been awhile since i've found music in its purest form. and to find music in its purest form, i've gotta separate myself from all the fluff, all the myspace stuff, all the marketing garbage, that can come later. but for now, i've just gotta connect with the music.

so i was tellin' good ol' steve of asian talent online that i'm regrouping, just stayin' out of the performance scene for a little while, not really been posting stuff on myspace lately 'cos ahem you know.

so i stopped by the studio for an appointment this week. 3000 dollars to finish my album, not bad. good mixing, good mastering. nice radio quality, album quality stuff in the works. "emerge" means a lot to me, i've dreamed it up since 2003.

in the meantime, i've had some recent curiosities. i'm really curious about canada 'cos i've never been there and i think the people there are awesome and so nice. i like the hiphop in toronto, heard some dope artists like latte d. kyd, eternia, and alleyne reppin' for toronto. i hope to make friends there if i go, and i'm glad everyone's so real.

so i've been cooking a lot lately. my brother who works at the ritz carlton in boca raton, florida says "cooking is caring." and i agree. cooking is something that's instilled in my family. my father gets all happy when he sees me cooking and i think there's some sort of cooking gene in our family 'cos i was born in pampanga, a province in the philippines known for its great cooks. on the menu tomorrow, em shish kabobs. made my own baba ghanouj dip today that was mmm good. i've got a crepe fetish and mmmm strawberries and bananas sound good. i've gained a little weight but i'll lose it.

i really feel that becoming a woman is about getting your values straight. i used to drop at a dime for practice and performances. but these are my priorities now. 1. God 2. family & friends (my boyfriend included) 3. career. I used to be so consumed with getting ahead that I didn't realize all the amazing blessings right in front o
